Terri R's Guide to Plagiarism and Avoiding it

Every college student today unless they live under a rock, knows that plagiarism is not allowed by any means and results in serious consequences for any one who does it. But with information so easy to obtain with today's current level of technology it is important and every one is clear on exactly what plagiarism is.

Plagiarism: Using someone else's words or ideas without identifying the source.

This definition is from the book Technical Communication in the Twenty-First Century. If I had not stated that then providing that definition would be plagiarising. The easiest way to tell if you are plagiarising is simply if you read something from a book or any where else it is better to be safe than sorry and cite it in whatever way is required by your class. With so much information readily available there is almost no way facts or statements you are making in a paper are completely your own original thoughts. A video from YouTube by the Michael G. Foster School of Business explains plagiarism in college and does a great job of explaining it.

Plagiarism is a very serious crime in college and in life, after all people work hard to get their ideas out there and share them with the world so that every one can benefit from their knowledge, so give credit where credit is due make sure to cite sources.

  1. The video you chose fit the post very well. It made some good points and was very informative. I didnt realize that information that is found in more than one source doesnt need to be cited. I think after reading your post and watching the video, most people should have a good understanding of what is acceptable and what isnt when writing.

  2. Overall, you did a good job on your post. However, you have some grammatical errors in your post and several comas are missing. Some of the sentences are not clear. For example, the last sentence in the first paragraph. I think that you should use “that” instead of “and”. In my opinion this sentence is also very confusing : “The easiest way to tell if you are plagiarising is simply if you read something from a book or any where else it is better to be safe than sorry and cite it in whatever way is required by your class.” And the word “plagiarizing” is misspelled. Other than that, I liked the video because it made some good points about plagiarism.

  3. This was a good post. It is definitely a subject college students need to know about, and probably needs to be reinforced over and over again. There were a few grammatical errors, but overall a good post. Good job!

  4. Terri,

I think that plagiarism is something that is very important for writers to understand which therefore makes this topic a great one.

I think that the video was a good choice to include versus a simple picture. It helped discuss the topic further. Having said that though there is something I would be aware of for your next blog. Your grammar/punctuation, and sentence structure. The idea of what you were trying to say was still able to get across, however, the sentence Magda mentioned, I agree was a bit confusing. I find that I will often think faster than my fingers will type and will often be left with a confusing sentence. Just be sure to re-read your work before posting because what it is that you are saying is valid.

Another thing I was hoping you would have done was provide more examples and/or tips on preventing plagiarism. Because it is such an important topic there is a lot to be said about it. Yes, plagiarism is wrong, but what are some ways that a writer can be sure he/she isn't doing it? Such things as examples, or ways that you found have worked for you to ensure you are not doing something illegal and wrong would have made this blog even better. Even with that said I still felt that your blog showed personality, which I really enjoyed reading. The first sentence in your blog made me chuckle and nod in agreement. Great job on the blog! I can't wait to read next weeks.
